Robert Randolph Jones, affectionately known as R. R. Jones, was one of the most respected educators in El Paso’s history. Over a career spanning three decades, he left an enduring mark on the city’s public schools, most notably as principal of El Paso High School. His legacy lives on through the school’s iconic R. R. Jones Stadium, which proudly bears his name.
Career in Education
Central High School (later El Paso High School): In 1915, the yearbook was dedicated to Jones in recognition of his contributions and leadership.
Assistant Principal: From 1916 to 1923, he served as El Paso High School's first assistant principal.
Assistant Superintendent: Jones also worked as assistant superintendent for El Paso Public Schools, shaping education across the city.
Principal: Returning to El Paso High School in 1936, he served as principal until his retirement in 1943.
Character and Legacy
R. R. Jones was remembered for his “unfailing courtesy, untiring spirit, and high ideals.” Students recalled how he knew each of them by name, making every individual feel valued.
In a 2017 El Paso Inc. article, one former student remembered Jones’s personal kindness, recalling how the principal gave him a shirt as a gift in 1942. His dedication to his students extended well beyond academics—he was a mentor, role model, and friend.
Retirement and Passing
After retiring in 1943, Jones moved to California, where he worked as a counselor at a boys’ school. He passed away on April 2, 1951, in San Bernardino, California.
