1952:
Led the Miners in passing, completing 102 of 208 passes for 1,520 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was named Border Conference MVP and was eighth in the nation in total offense and 10th in passing.
1953:
Threw for a career-high 216 yards at West Texas State and was also the punter in 1952.
1954 Sun Bowl:
He was involved in 19 of the Miners' 37 points, including two touchdown passes and four extra points. He was named the first-ever C.M. Hendricks Most Valuable Player.
Post-Football:
Shinaut was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in 1954 but chose to pursue a law career instead.
Legacy:
He was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 and into the UTEP Hall of Fame in 2015 and passed away in 1991.
Richard “Dick” Shinaut graduated in January 1950. His activities at EPHS were All District Football, Track, “E” Club, Student Council, Senior Follies & A Choir.
He was a prominent quarterback for the Texas Western Miners football team during the 1950s. He was known for his passing ability and was named the Border Conference MVP in 1952, and was the first C.M. Hendricks Most Valuable Player in the 1954 Sun Bowl. Shinaut was also a key contributor to the Miners' 37-14 victory over Southern Mississippi in the 1954 Sun Bowl, throwing two touchdown passes and kicking four extra points.
