A Life of Service
Marilyn Moore Cromeans has devoted her life to education, community service, and support of El Paso's schools and universities. Born in Marshall, Texas, on August 25, 1936, she is the daughter of Ross Moore, a respected coach and athletic trainer at UTEP, and Dana Kathleen Taylor Moore, a librarian. Growing up in a family that valued learning and service shaped the course of her life.
She graduated from El Paso High School in 1954, where she was an outstanding student and campus leader. Her activities included Student Council, National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, varsity tennis, P.E. Leader, ROTC Sponsor Lieutenant, and Basketball Queen. She attended Texas Christian University before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education, with a minor in Education, from Texas Western College in 1958.
Career and Community Leadership
Marilyn began her teaching career at El Paso Technical High School and later taught in Las Cruces and throughout the El Paso Independent School District. During her career she taught physical education, English, reading, classroom subjects, and mathematics, influencing generations of students. Her professional career reflected a lifelong commitment to helping young people reach their potential.
Outside the classroom, Marilyn became one of El Paso's most dedicated volunteers. She has served in leadership roles with the UTEP Alumni Association, UTEP Heritage Commission, Miner Athletic Club, UTEP Woman's Auxiliary, Discover El Paso, P.E.O., the El Paso Commission for Women, and numerous educational and civic organizations. She also organized multiple El Paso High School class reunions and helped lead the 'Year of the El Paso High Tiger' celebration honoring the 1950s.
Her many honors include the UTEP Gold Nugget Award from the College of Education (2010), induction into the El Paso Commission for Women Hall of Fame (2011), and numerous national and state awards from Zeta Tau Alpha recognizing decades of distinguished service. Marilyn's greatest pride remains her family: her children David Ross Cromeans and Dana Ray Cromeans CassoLopez, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her life reflects the values of scholarship, leadership, and service that continue to inspire the El Paso community.
